I had been wanting to update my fawn logo since I made it the first time, back in 2017! The first iteration just wasn’t quite what I had in mind, and it bugged me to no end. I wanted something a little more elegant and refined, that translated better at a smaller size. I also really wanted to incorporate my love of Art Nouveau! I’m pretty happy with how this turned out! I think I’ll keep it. 😉
Process
I knew I wanted an uneven watercolour look for this, not perfectly flat colours, so I went with a traditional medium instead of digital, because I haven’t yet found a great way to imitate this look digitally! Here are the steps that were not shown in the video:
> Draw fawn in pencil
> Outline with black Micron pens
> Scan onto computer
> Print out
> Trace the design in pencil on the back of the paper, using a window as a back light
I then taped that to the watercolour paper as seen in the video, and traced over it a second time, this time on the front of the page, to transfer the pencil lines from the back. I probably could have skipped the scanning and printing, but this way I have a nice clean page in my sketchbook, and a nice clean digital file of the outline, should I need it for anything in the future! I need to do some more research as to how to get a better watercolour look in digital without having Procreate, which requires an Ipad! I chose to go with a route I was more familiar with, to produce the look I wanted and get it done faster. On the plus side, I’ve got a pretty picture to hang in my art room now!
Materials
The materials used for this project were:
> Mechanical pencil with standard lead for sketching
> Black Micron pens for outline(I think sizes were 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5)
> Mechanical pencil with “B” type lead for tracing (softer lead than usual, so it transfers a bit better)
> Small stylus tool and red coloured pencil for transferring
> Dr. Ph Martin’s radiant concentrated watercolour inks in Olive Green, Slate Blue, Mahogany, Wild Rose, Sepia, and Gold Brown. All from the “B” set.
> Jacquard’s Pinata alcohol ink in “rich gold”
> Sakura brand travel watercolour brush pen (the one with water in it). This one is my fave that I’ve tried. Others have been leaky.
> Variety of small cheap watercolour brushes from Michael’s. I don’t have anything fancy in that department. 🙂
> Strathmore paper for acrylic painting
